Good morning!
I am so happy to share the 7th video of my new mini-series of art journal how to videos with you!
I am calling this series:
8-Layer Journaling
Back in February of 2015, Shannon Green put out a YouTube video series, called Journaling by 5s. It took the fear and guesswork out of art journaling. I would highly recommend you go check that process and her work out…Shannon is truly inspirational!!!
To quickly paraphrase her process is that you create 20 art journaling pages in 5 – 15 minute sessions, by layering 2 pre-determined media types per session.
Shannon’s Session are as follows:
- Background – Paint, Ink
- Texture – Collage, Recycle
- Pattern – Stamps, Stencils
- Focal Point – Words, Images
- Details – Pen, Pencils
Although, I really do love this process, I modified it pretty early on, because I was nowhere near able to get my sessions completed within the allotted time, which drove me BANANAS! I felt like I would do better if I limited myself to one medium per session, and to limit my use of mediums to only 5 options. For example, for the paint layer, I limit myself to only 5 tubes/bottles/jars/etc of color, to cut down on my need to overthink the process. Doing this allowed me to finally get all 20 pages done within the allotted 15 minutes. SUCCESS!!
I have used this process for creating my Soul Sister Cards, and for something I like to call Doodling books that I find super fun to play on while I am on an airplane or waiting someplace!! Every time I have done this process the pages end up looking so different from each other, and I am always so amazed at how cool they turn out!!!
So my modified version, which I am calling 8-Layer Journaling is:
- Paint
- Paper
- Washi
- Stamps
- Stencil
- Focal Image
- Words
- Pen Work
So, with all of the logistics out of the way…
Let’s get on to Layer #7
Words!
- I have typed, formatted and printed up a list of various thoughts that I want to remember by documenting them onto my cards. (These are printed on regular printer paper)
- I grabbed a pair of scissors, and a glue stick
- Set my timer
- and got to playing!!
Just in case you need some help coming with ideas on what thoughts you might use on your 8-Layer Journaling pages, here are the ones I printed (I did not use them all), for your use. Please feel free to copy, paste and use any or all of these for your personal use! 🙂
My List of Thoughts
- You can find me somewhere in between inspiring others, working on myself, dodging negativity, and slaying my goals
- Be the kind of woman that when your feet hit the floor each morning, the Devil says, “Oh crap, she’s up!”
- There’s room for all of us to win. If you don’t live like that, prepare to lose
- She was powerful, not because she wasn’t scared but because she went on so strongly, despite the fear
- You did not wake up today to be mediocre
- Don’t let the behavior of others destroy your inner peace
- Sometimes you have to get knocked down lower than you ever have been, to stand up taller than you were before
- Sometimes your only available transportation is the leap of faith
- You can have anything that you want as long as you are willing to do the hard work to get there
- The surest way to be miserable is to try and please everybody
- Everything you want is on the other side of fear
- Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase
- Trust the magic of new beginnings
- You don’t always need a plan. Sometimes you just need to breathe, trust, let go and see what happens.
- Don’t be so hard on yourself, just get back up and try again
- Whenever you are feeling bad for yourself, get up and go help someone else
- You never know what you are capable of, until you go out and try
- Get up, get dressed, show up, and do the work…the rewards will come later
- Live today as if it is a gift…because it is
- I don’t always know what I want to do, but I do know what kind of woman I want to be
- Go live your dreams…out loud
- Dare to be different. Dare to be a pioneer. Be the kind of woman who in the face of adversity will continue to embrace life and walk fearlessly toward the challenge
- Turn your wounds into wisdom
- The biggest adventure you could ever take is to live the life of your dreams
- Be thankful for what you have, you will end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.
- You get in life what you have the courage to ask for
- Step out of the history that is holding you back. Step into the new story you are willing to create.
- If you do work that you love, and the work fulfills you, the rest will come
If you do decide to do this 8-Layer Journaling process with me, I want to highly encourage you to not purchase anything new…use whatever you have in your stash. (This is probably something we could all hear a little bit more of!)
I hope that this is something that you might be inspired to try, and if you do, please share on Instagram #8layerjournaling I would LOVE to see your creations!!!
Thanks so much for stopping by! If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know in the comments section! I am always happy to be of help!!
Now it is your turn to get creating!
Here is to having some fun!
